Privacy Policy
Stand Clear (“we,” “us,” or “our”) is a subway navigation app for New York City riders. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app handles, how it is used, and the choices you have. By using Stand Clear, you agree to this policy.
Summary
- We do not operate our own servers or user accounts.
- Most data stays on your iPhone.
- We do not sell your personal information.
- We do not use third-party advertising or analytics SDKs.
Information We Collect and Use
Location (optional)
If you choose “Use current location” or tap the map locate button, the app requests a single, on-demand location fix while the app is in use. Location is used only to suggest nearby stations and center the map. We do not continuously track your location in the background, and we do not upload your location to our servers (we do not operate servers).
Trip and ride history (on your device)
When you plan trips or mark a journey complete, the app may store details such as origin and destination stations, lines ridden, stations passed through, fare amounts, and timestamps. This information is saved locally on your device to power ride history, statistics, and the 7-day fare cap display.
Saved places (on your device)
If you save locations such as Home or Work, the app stores the label, display name, and coordinates on your device so you can route to them quickly.
Payment tracking (optional)
Stand Clear can optionally help track OMNY subway fares for the weekly fare cap display. You control whether this is enabled:
- Apple Card (FinanceKit): If you link Apple Card, the app reads Apple Card transactions on your device through Apple’s FinanceKit APIs. Only transactions that appear to be MTA/OMNY subway charges are used. We do not receive your full card number, and this data is not sent to us.
- Shortcuts automation: You may set up an Apple Wallet automation that passes transaction details (such as merchant name, amount, and card label) to the app’s “Log Subway Tap” action. The app ignores non-MTA charges. This runs on your device; we do not receive this data on a server.
You can disable Apple Card linking in the app at any time. You can remove or disable the Shortcuts automation in the Shortcuts app.
Information We Do Not Collect
- We do not require you to create an account.
- We do not collect your name, email address, or phone number in the app.
- We do not use cross-app tracking or the App Tracking Transparency framework for advertising.
Network Requests and Third-Party Services
To provide transit information, the app makes network requests from your device to public services. These requests do not include your identity or account information:
- Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA): Live train arrivals and service alerts from MTA open data feeds.
- Apple MapKit: When you search for an address or place, your search query is sent to Apple’s MapKit service to return results. Apple’s handling of that data is governed by Apple’s Privacy Policy.
Subway map geometry, station data, and route planning run on your device using data bundled with the app.
How We Use Information
We use the information described above only to:
- Plan routes and show boarding guidance
- Display live arrivals and service alerts
- Remember your saved places and ride history
- Estimate weekly fare cap progress when you enable payment tracking
- Improve reliability and fix bugs within the app
Data Storage and Retention
Trip history, saved places, and payment-tracking preferences are stored locally on your iPhone using standard iOS storage (such as UserDefaults). Data remains on your device until you delete it, reset the app’s data by uninstalling the app, or replace your device without restoring from backup.
Sharing of Information
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We do not share your personal information with third parties except:
- When required by law or valid legal process
- When necessary to protect our rights, users, or the public
- Through the third-party services listed above (MTA and Apple), which receive only the minimum information needed to fulfill your request from your device
Your Choices and Rights
- Location: You can deny or revoke location permission in iOS Settings. The app still works if you enter stations manually.
- Payment tracking: Optional. Disable Apple Card linking in the app or remove your Shortcuts automation.
- Delete data: Uninstalling Stand Clear removes locally stored app data from your device.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights to access, correct, or delete personal information. Because we do not operate accounts or servers, most information is already under your control on your device. Contact us if you have questions about your rights.
Children’s Privacy
Stand Clear is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the app, please contact us.
Security
We rely on Apple’s platform security for data stored on your device. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we design the app to minimize data collection and keep sensitive information on your device.
International Users
Stand Clear is built for riders in the New York City area. If you use the app outside the United States, your information may be processed according to this policy and applicable local law.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Effective” date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after an update means you accept the revised policy.
